The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (“Ministry”) under Government of Nepal has issued a notice on 25 March 2025 (12 Chaitra 2081) requiring all social media platforms operating in Nepal to register with the Ministry within 30 days (i.e., by 24 April 2025).
Key Points:
- All the social media platforms operating in Nepal must submit an application for enlistment pursuant to the Directives for Managing the Use of Social Media, 2023 (2080) (“Social Media Directives”);
- Platforms such as Viber Media S.a.r.l., TikTok Pte. Ltd., and Saransa Media Lab Pvt. Ltd. (Weetok) have already completed registration and are currently operating in compliance with these requirements;
- Platforms must establish three positions in Nepal: a Point of Contact, a resident Grievance Handling Officer, and an Officer for Monitoring Compliance;
- Platforms failing to register by the deadline may be banned from operating in Nepal pursuant to Section 3(7) of the Social Media Directives.
